The Best Wedding Photos Aren't Always the Serious Ones
Say "I Do" to a Little Fun: Creative Wedding Photo Ideas That Show Off Your Personality
Every couple wants beautiful wedding photos. But the ones that get pulled out year after year, the ones that make guests laugh at the anniversary slideshow... those are usually the shots that broke the mold a little.
Take one of my favorite portraits from a wedding at a local golf club. The groom is stretched out flat on his back on the green, eyes closed, completely at ease. His bride stands over him in her gown, golf club in hand, balancing a tee, and a golf ball right by the tip of his nose. One wrong move and that ball comes tumbling down. It's silly. It's a little risky. And it's them... two people who trust each other completely and don't take themselves too seriously.
That's the kind of moment I love to capture.
Why Playful Portraits Matter
Traditional portraits have their place. You'll always want the classic formal shots for the family album. But a wedding day is also full of inside jokes, shared hobbies, and the kind of chemistry that only comes from two people who really know each other. A great photographer notices that and makes room for it.
Some of the best "fun" portraits come from:
A shared hobby or passion; golf, hiking, cooking, an old college tradition
A running joke between the couple, something only they (and maybe their closest friends) will fully get
An unexpected location, the golf course, the bar, the parking lot at sunset
A little bit of trust... like a golf ball balanced on someone's nose
None of these require a script. They just require a photographer who's paying attention and a couple who's willing to have fun.
How to Bring This Into Your Own Wedding
If you love this idea, here's how to make it happen on your day:
Tell your photographer about your hobbies and inside jokes ahead of time. The best creative shots usually come from a conversation before the wedding, not an idea on the spot.
Build in 10-15 minutes during portraits for something unscripted. This isn't about adding stress to your timeline it's about giving your photographer a little room to play.
Trust the process. Some of the best photos come from an idea that sounds a little strange until you see the result.
Don't force it. If a fun photo doesn't feel natural for you as a couple, skip it. Authenticity is what makes these portraits work, not novelty for its own sake.
It's About Capturing Who You Really Are
At the end of the day, wedding photography isn't just about documenting an event — it's about preserving what makes your relationship yours. Sometimes that's a quiet, tender look. Sometimes it's a golf ball balanced on a nose. Both are worth capturing.
That's what I love most about this work after 36 years behind the camera: no two couples are ever the same, and neither are their photos.
