Why We Show Up Early: The Case for Scouting Your Destination Wedding
There's a particular kind of light that hits a Cape Cod dock about an hour before sunset. It's soft, it's golden, and it lasts for maybe fifteen minutes. If you don't know it's coming, if you've never stood on that exact spot and watched the sun move across that exact water, you'll miss it.
That's why, whenever we're booked for a destination wedding, we don't fly in the morning of. We arrive a day or two early.
It's Not a Vacation, It's Reconnaissance
We just wrapped a wedding on the Cape, and like we do for every out-of-town celebration, we spent the days before walking the grounds, the docks, the beaches, and the backstreets near the venue. We're checking:
Where the sun rises and sets relative to the ceremony and reception spaces, so we know exactly when golden hour will hit and where to have you standing when it does
Backup locations in case of weather, construction, or a closed dock
Hidden gems nearby that never make it onto the venue's website... a weathered piling, a quiet alley, a boat that happens to be tied up at just the right angle.
Logistics like how long it actually takes to walk from the getting-ready suite to the ceremony site, so your timeline doesn't fall apart on the day
The Difference Shows Up in the Photos
A photographer meeting a location for the first time during your ceremony is improvising. A photographer who scouted it two days earlier is directing. That's the difference between a nice photo and the photo, the one where the light, the composition, and the moment all land at once.
It's also why we only take one wedding per weekend. Scouting takes time, and we're not willing to shortcut it just to fit in more bookings.
